12/17/2023 0 Comments Rick steves france dordogne![]() ![]() Without knowing your interests, I'd just suggest that late October weather could be a tie-breaker - Normandy is one of France's colder wetter regions, though you could have weather issues anywhere that time of year. You could easily enjoy 8 days in any of those regions (with Normandy, you could build in an overnight at Mont-St-Michel). In that case, I'd pick one area or the other, or maybe add the Loire to Normandy. I probably wouldn't do it myself, though I enjoy driving, for the same reasons as you (I'm a little older). And you're paying train fares and car rental charges on the same day, twice. That's one possible scenario, though maybe a rushed one. There are only two TGV trains a day from Bordeaux direct to CDG, the others take you to Gare Montparnasse where you have to cross Paris to get to the airport. 1, drive from Sarlat, or thereabouts, to Bordeaux, about 3 hours, drop the car and take the 3:23 TGV direct to CDG, arriving at 7:41 that evening, where you check into your airport hotel (we liked the Ibis, there are others) and make your flight the next day. Or you could spend one less day in Normandy and spend it here. If you broke the drive into two days, your three days will still give you a good Dordogne visit. ![]() 27, then your wake up in, say, Sarlat on the 28th and have that day plus the 29th, 30th, and 31st for the Dordogne, four full days. If you've toughed out the long drive on Oct. Or just drive to Tours (about 3 hours from Bayeux) and spend the rest of your trip exploring the Loire Valley if you haven't been there and it interests you. You could break it in Tours or Poitiers or thereabouts and give it two days. This will take 7-8 hours without building in stops. 27 you drive to, say, Sarlat or one of the nearby Dordogne towns. Next two days, 25th and 26th, you can explore the beaches and/or take one of the guided tours. 24 an early train out of Gare St-Lazare gets you to Caen in about 2 hours, pick up the car and you can be in Bayeux by lunchtime, view the cathedral and tapestry that afternoon. Hopefully Matt from Somerville will stop by - he's vacationed with his family a couple of times and has always used their time to the utmost!! But yes, a great part of the pleasure will be sitting and sipping and enjoying the beautiful countryside and the honeyed stone buildings.OK, so on Oct. Have a wonderful time, I'm completely jealous of your plans! Product Details About the Author Table of Contents Product Details. Planning a one- to two-week trip Check out Rick Steves Best of France. There is also a small Casino supermarket in the center of Lalinde. Make the most of every day and every dollar with Rick Steves France. ![]() That one will be easy to stop at in your car coming or going. That one is more likely to keep normal opening hours during August. It looks like there's a big Intermarché (supermarket) on the eastern outskirts of Lalinde, address route de Mauzac (on the D703 on the eastern side of town). The town map shows where the pharmacy is, so that's good (but you'll still need to check and make sure that it's open in August, and if so, what hours). The market will be great and you can get a lot of what you need, but of course sometimes you need some other things from the small supermarket. One thing I would figure out is where the nearest town with a small supermarket is - from looking, it wasn't clear that there is one in Couze-et-Saint-Front - and what hours it is open (especially important in August). I don't have any recommendations for the drive down, which is likely to be long enough on its own. There's also lots of canoeing in this area, while driving around you'll see plenty of spots where you can rent canoes. ![]() We did a boat ride that departed from La Roque-Gageac, and loved going down the river to see the beautiful sites on the shore. I've spent some time further east on the river and visiting Beynac and La Roque-Gageac, and up to Domme, which is a gorgeous village with incredible views back down along the river valleys. I just saw some photos on Instagram the other day of a village near there, Monpazier, which the person visiting it said was particularly charming. I've only been a little further east of there, but this area has got to be gorgeous too. That sounds heavenly, and my idea of a truly relaxing vacation. ![]()
